Why I Write These:
This is an initiative I started in 2018 to begin documenting my life better. It’s meant to be a snapshot of a day both for public disclosure of what is going on, both good and hard things in my life. It also serves as a record that I hope to be able to look back on in future years. This concept was inspired by my grandfather, Leon Milton Buttermore, who has a memory that I am envious of, and I hope that by doing this I am able to be the kind of man who starts to treasure the things given him.
Godly thought of the day:
Acts 1:6-7 says: “So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “it is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.”
Just a friendly and humbling reminder to me today that some things belong only to the Lord. Some things are secret (Deuteronomy 29:29). We don’t know the dates and times, but it is comforting to know the Lord has set them and they are coming. So we can long for them, but not as a people expecting them at specific times and specific ways that we will be able to comprehend unless they have been clearly revealed to us by the Lord.
This is also just your friendly reminder that if anyone claims they know something about the end times and it gets extrabiblical quickly, and they claim to know dates and times — that they’re explicitly outside of the teaching of Jesus Christ and you ought to totally run away from that person’s teaching on that subject.
The Lord is powerful. His ways are not my ways. His thoughts not my own. I must submit and be patient to His timing in all things, even if I do not understand why I must do so sometimes.
Favorite meeting of the day:
No meetings today. A card ride up and down to Tulsa with Ethan was great as we hung out with the ultimate team.
Hardest part of my day:
Not having waterproof boots for the fields, and having to wear chacos as my poor feet got battered all day. They got really, really cold a few times but they made it and I can feel all my toes. So I survived.
Favorite moment of the day:
Shooting out tweets in the last game with Ethan like madmen. They weren’t good. I won’t pretend they were. But we were laughing and having a great time even as we were freezing.
What was the weather like today?:
Ugh. Tulsa. Rain and wind everywhere. And cold. Mud. Mud everywhere. It was bad.
Most unfaithful moment of my day:
Not sure about that today. I didn’t have any particular moment I felt unfaithful today. It was a simple day. I didn’t have a lot of distractions, and I was around good folks. I’m sure I did some things for at least partly selfish reasons, but to be frank nothing comes to mind today.
What am I currently reading?:
Daily Bible Reading – Numbers 25 & 26
Dangerous Calling by Paul Tripp – No reading for this today.
Church History by Eusebius – No reading for this today. It will be a periodical read at best.
Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave by Ed Welch – No reading for this tonight.
On the Incarnation by Athanasius – No reading for this today.
No Place for Truth: Or Whatever Happened to Evangelical Theology? by David F. Wells – No reading for this today.
Academ’s Fury by Jim Butcher – Going to read some of that tonight.
What was for dinner?:
Lots of dinner! Meatballs, pulled pork, chips and a mean queso dip. Cake. Lots of food. After a day of cold and not much to eat, my body enjoyed the massive meal at the end of a long day of travel and standing.
Song of the day:
Christ Is Risen by Matt Maher – The title says it all. How can you not get excited hearing the words “Christ is risen!” They’re the words that all of our hope hinges upon.
Quote of the day:
“What we’re putting out into the world isn’t the Gospel if we’re not being filled with the Gospel.” — Ethan Penner
Just a simple, but effective quote that our Gospel message is an outflowing of an abundant life filled by Jesus Christ. It ought to be that we preach the Gospel because we are busting at the seams with Christ and to contain it is madness. If that’s not the place that our witness comes from, then it may just be that we have no real witness to give. Either that or we in a time of some apostasy and need to remember our first love so that our witness can become effective once more as it is filled and fueled by Christ’s power.
Prayer of the day:
Thank you, Father, for accepting Jesus’ work and glorifying Him through the raising of Him. He is alive! Holy Spirit, come and teach me about this Savior so that I might be saved and able to properly be filled so that my life can be an outpouring of that.
