Daily Diary – 5/6/18

Why I Write These:

These are written in honor of my grandfather, Leon Milton Buttermore, who has a memory that I am envious of, and I hope that by doing this I am able to be the kind of man who starts to treasure the things given him.

Daily Highlights:

Godly thought of the day:

Ezra 7:10 says: “For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.”

This is my Dad’s favorite verse (or at least one of them.) Felt that it is worth documenting that fact, as well as just pointing out how great of a mission this would be for any Christian. It’s kind of my 1 Timothy 4 passage, I think. Great text. Studying and observing and teaching God’s word is not a thing done lightly. It is a thing that requires devotion. May we all aspire to be devoted to this word so that all of us can commend the works of God as revealed by God to future generations until Christ comes back!

Favorite meeting of the day:

Life Group was great today. Super fun.

Hardest part of my day:

Just being tired tonight. Man, I’ve just been beat. Ready to sleep, so I’m busting through this blog tonight.

Favorite moment of the day:

Cole kicked off my flip flops while I was sitting next to him. It was completely unexpected and hilarious. I had trouble not giggling for awhile. What a funny moment.

What was the weather like today?:

We had Life Group outside. ‘Nuff said.

Most unfaithful moment of my day:

I feel that it was a good day. I had lots of sermons going in the car and then I was able to hop into Life Group and then I organized something for ABF and now I’m doing lesson until now. Not a lot of time for idleness to be unfaithful, which is generally a key to me being faithful vs. unfaithful.

What am I currently reading?:

Daily Bible Reading – 1 Chronicles 3-5

Dangerous Calling by Paul Tripp – No reading for this today.

Church History by Eusebius – No reading for this today.

Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave by Ed Welch – No reading for this today.

No Place for Truth: Or Whatever Happened to Evangelical Theology? by David F. Wells – Going to read a bit of this in a moment.

On the Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther – No reading for this today.

What was for dinner?:

Tacos and every other delectable thing you’ve ever wanted.

Song of the day:

Be Still by Newsboys – When I get tired sometimes I get fatigued and get weary of doing good. I need to be still, be expectant, wait upon the Lord, and then follow him. It’s so easy to start freaking out and seizing any kind of rest and power I can get. But that’s not healthy. So this song is potent for me today.

Quote of the day:

“This is not a rags-to-riches story, but this is a death-to-life story.” — Stephen Martin

Putting the Gospel into perspective with this powerful image from Ephesians 2. I think so often we want to pretend that we were just a down on our luck beggar and God helped us get a bit of a leg up so we could become the prince we were always supposed to be. But Ephesians 2 dismantles this notion, and shows that this is a story of the dead living. That’s so much cooler though!

Prayer of the day:

Lord, thank you for life. Because you gave it to me, you get to ask what you will of it. It was never mine to start with and I only have it because you gave it to me. Use it for your glory, Lord.
